Please join us for an open mic without the stage, mic, host, and sign-up list. But that’s just a poetry circle, you say? You are correct!
This Sunday we’ll be joined by a special guest! Our featured poet is Lewis M!
More about our feature: Lewis M. is a dork. He is also a multi-talented poet, writer, music producer, rap artist, and 3 time Uno world champion. Lewis started writing at the age of eleven, and discovered poetry slam at age fourteen. Since then, he has performed at venues and events across the country, including The Apollo Theater (New York, NY), The Smithsonian Museum (Washington, DC), The United Nations (New York, NY), TEDxBoston (Boston, MA), and TEDxVail (Vail, CO). In college, Lewis founded The OFFICIAL MassArt Poetry Alliance, which has been hosting open mics and poetry slams since 2008. A skilled and trained educator, Lewis was awarded with the Newman Civic Fellowship award for his work teaching poetry. He has taught at schools and universities spanning the northeast, and has worked as a poet in residence at Dorchester Academy. Lewis’ poetry is most known for its hard hitting truths, and confronts topics of institutional racism, masculinity, and identity.
Please feel free to bring a couple of poems to read! You can also read poetry by other poets, or just listen!
The space is small and set up like a living room. There is legitimate comfy seating on chairs/couches for ~12, and floor seating for an additional ~5, and standing room/lurking in the doorway after that.
The Endopolis Poetry Room is in Suite 201 on the second floor of 40 Main St, an office building in downtown Florence, MA. To use the elevator, go in the doors under the Central Building / Main Entrance sign. Follow the hall back to the elevator and go up to the 2nd floor. Take a right off the elevator and follow signs all the way down (through a bunch of doors) to 201.
To use the outside stairs, first identify the North building and its exterior signage (it’s to your left if standing in the parking lot, facing 40 Main). There is an outdoor stairway next to the North building. Take it up to the 2nd floor. Once inside the exterior door there—you’ll be in an unheated lobby thing—201 is the door on your left.
IMPORTANT NOTE: To enter the 201 space there are three carpeted steps down. There’s no way around them, and there’s no railing. Let me know if you want to make a game-plan around this inaccessibility.
ANOTHER NOTE: There are gendered bathrooms for us to use in the building, down a long-ish hallway. They are near the elevator.
This event if 100% free, though we do welcome donations to offset costs of featured performers.
